When hope feels hard to find.
Jul 09, 2026When your child is struggling with school anxiety, it can feel as though life has become incredibly dark. You might be dealing with difficult mornings, worrying about your child all the time, trying to juggle work and family life, and wondering what on earth you're supposed to do next. Before long, every conversation seems to be about what's gone wrong, what's difficult, or what isn't working. And when you're living like that day after day, it can be really hard to feel hopeful.
I was reminded of that recently when I came across a quote by Desmond Tutu. He said: "Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness."
I loved that because it made me think about the families I work with.
When everything feels overwhelming, it's completely understandable that all we can see are the problems. Our brains naturally focus on what's difficult because we're trying to solve it. But sometimes, in doing that, we stop noticing the little things that are already helping or are working well.
Hope doesn't always begin with a huge breakthrough. Sometimes it begins by noticing what's already there.
Even children who are finding school incredibly hard often have little glimmers of light. It might be one teacher they trust. One good friend. A subject they actually enjoy. Or a club where they feel like they belong.
Those things don't make the difficulties disappear. But they tell us something really important. They show us where your child feels safe, connected, understood or capable. And those are often the very best places to start when we're thinking about support.
One of the first things I do when I'm working with families is help them look at both sides of the picture. Yes, we want to understand what's making school difficult. But I also want to know what's already working. Because those strengths become the foundations we build on.
If you're feeling stuck and you're not quite sure where to begin, I've created a free School Anxiety Checklist. It helps you identify both the things that are making school difficult and also some of the things that are going OK. You can download the checklist here.
The first step is gaining a clearer understanding of your child's experience. And often, that's where hope begins.
