Support for School Anxiety

In-Depth Assessment
If you want to get a rounded picture of your child's strengths and needs, you may decide to commission a full assessment. This typically involves me talking to you and school staff (when possible), observing your child in school, talking to your child to gain their views and undertaking relevant assessments.
Where do assessment usually take place?
Do I need to send you any information before the assessment?
What kind of assessments will you do?
Do you diagnose dyslexia or dyscalculia?
What will be in the report?
Can you help school staff implement your recommendations?
How much does an assessment cost?
Do you provide reports for tribunals?
Online Consultation
Consultation is cost effective way to gain advice from an educational psychologist. It is an opportunity to talk through any concerns you may have about your child's difficulties in school, to come to a shared understanding of what might be causing these difficulties and to think through possible next steps. The focus is on collaboration and problem solving. Ideally, your child's teacher would also be at the consultation, but if this is not possible then I can just meet with you.

What happens in a consultation?
What kinds of things can we talk about in consultation?
My child has lots of difficulties. Can we talk about all of these issues?
Can my child's teacher attend the consultation too?
Do I need to send you any information before the consultation?
Do we get a written report?
How do I access the consultation?

Support for School Anxiety
Help your child feel happier and less worried about going to school.
School anxiety can be devastating for children and families. Parents can often feel unsupported, helpless and blamed, not knowing how best to help their child in the face of conflicting advice. Early intervention is key to stop anxiety becoming embedded and school avoidance entrenched.
With our support and guidance, you can have a better understanding of:
- why your child is finding it so hard to attend school.
- how special educational needs can contribute to school anxiety.
- what support you can expect to be put in place by schools.
- how you can support your child to improve their well-being and mental health.
- what an effective plan of support looks like.

The School Attendance Clarity Cards are a tool to help children and young people aged between about 7 and 16 to easily communicate why they find it so hard to attend school.
Starting in February 2025

The School Anxiety Support Parent Programme and Community is for parents of children who are (or may be) neurodivergent and who are struggling to attend school due to anxiety. It helps parents to:
- find out what's really making school so hard.
- develop a practical action plan using expert advice and proven strategies, even when it feels as if nothing has worked in the past.
- have the confidence and support to implement the plan, reassured they are doing what is right for their child, even if they get pushback from others.
