Unsure why your child is worried about school? Common reasons explained.
Feb 27, 2025It's not always easy to know why your child is worried about school? But understanding the reasons is the first step towards identifying the right support.
Common Reasons for School Anxiety include:
- Social & Emotional Challenges – Emotional overwhelm caused by things like fear of making mistakes, speaking in class, or separation anxiety. Some kids feel like they don’t belong, face bullying, struggle with friendships, or have difficulties navigating complex social interactions.
- Academic Challenges – Schoolwork may feel too hard (or too easy), leading to frustration and worry. Difficulties with writing, focus, organisation, or remembering instructions can make the school day exhausting.
- School Environment Issues – Sensory overload (noise, brightness, crowds) can be overwhelming, especially for autistic children. Strict rules, harsh punishments, or uncaring staff can also increase anxiety.
- Home Life Factors – Family challenges like bereavement, health issues, financial struggles, or parental conflict may contribute to school-related stress.
Parents can help by trying to find out what's going on.Understanding why your child is struggling is the first step to getting the right support.
- Talk to your child – Try asking open-ended “what” questions instead of “why” questions to understand their struggles.
- Work with the school – Share insights and collaborate on solutions.
- Consider seeking professional help – A therapist or psychologist can support anxiety, learning needs, and emotional well-being.
